In the early 1970s, gherkin growing grew in La Rioja to the extend of turning into Spain's leading gherkin production area.

Gherkins, whether fresh or pickled, are mainly exported to European packers.

Producers were grouped into companies established for marketing purposes, such as Riojalna and Asperio (Rioja Gherkin Association). The latter also became a pioneer in using pasteurisation and glass jars for preserving and packaging gherkins.

Over the years, various professionals associated with these companies continued the initial venture by founding Comercial Rioverde, S.A. in 1976, with the aim of producing, packaging and selling pickles and canned products of the highest quality.
